Japanese BBQ Sauce

Prep: 5 min
Cook: 15 min
Total: 20 min
Makes about 3 cups
Difficulty: Easy

This is the sauce I use on my Asian Style Ribs — and honestly on just about everything else too. It's savory, a little sweet, and has that deep umami flavor from the miso. Make a big batch and store it in a glass jar in the fridge. It keeps well and makes weeknight dinners so much easier.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups low sodium soy sauce
  • ½ cup rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup miso
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp minced ginger
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2–3 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. 1

Add all ingredients to a saucepan.

  2. 2

    Whisk together until fully combined.

  3. 3

Heat over medium-high heat, stirring frequently.

  4. 4

Reduce heat but keep at a low boil, continuing to stir frequently until the sauce has thickened.

  5. 5

Let cool completely, then transfer to a glass jar. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Tips & Variations

  • ✦Use this as the glaze on my Asian Style Ribs — it's what makes them.
  • ✦Start with 2 tbsp of honey and taste — add the third if you want it a little sweeter.
  • ✦Stores well in the fridge in a sealed glass jar. Great on chicken, salmon, and stir fry too.
